The most prominent feature of these field recording are the symphonies of exquisite birdsong that audibly inform of the dimensions of this periurban tropical soundscape. After nightfall the audio environment changes to be completely occupied by insects and nocturnal mammals such as fruit bats. These recordings were made in the Northern part of Nairobi in a residential area. This part of the starts to elevate in altitude compared to the rest of the City as it approaches it's northern neighbouring county of Kiambu. As you hear plethora of natural sounds moving toward and around you the city in the distance is also audible though mainly as an indistinguishable drone. The lo-fi drone does not at all obscure the hi-fi natural soundscape. Some recordings were made in 2019 and some have been made during this current 2020 pandemic situation whereby the country is in a state of quarantining and isolation. When there is a curfew at night there is an eerie audible silence in the range of ~ 500 Hz to 2000 Hz which is noticeably the bandwidth of the dronage that comes from the traffic in the 2019 recordings.
Soundscape synopis: A large variety of tropical species of birds and also animals like Vervet monkeys roam within this soundscape and we are lucky enough to have over 30 species of birds in this recording in addition to the Vervet Monkey. You can hear the sounds echoing from around the neighbourhood, children; chicken; guinea fowl; the occasional vehicle making it's way down the potholed street.
The perfect juxtaposition between urban and natural - the unique soundscape of an African city.
